4-H/FFA Cleanest Stall, Display & Decorating Awards

A committee representing the Fair Board will judge the following categories and trophies will be presented at the annual 4-H Awards Night. Names of trophy sponsors follow each category listing.

  • Best Decorated Stall in the Horse Barn: Davis County Saddle Club. Award will be presented during the 4-H/FFA Horse Show. It will be judged on neatness and safety. No lights, balloons, thumbtacks or nails please. The decorating is to be done by youth horse project members only! If you have questions ask the horse barn superintendent.

CASI Chili Cook-off and Homemade Salsa Contest

CHILI COOKED ON SITE: All chili must be cooked on site the day of the cook-off from scratch. All chili will be prepared out in the open (no cooking inside motor homes, etc.)

CHILI COOKED FROM SCRATCH: “Scratch” is defined as starting with raw meat. Regular commercial chili powder is permissible, but complete commercial chili mixes are not permitted.

NO FILLERS IN CHILI: No beans, macaroni, rice, hominy, or other similar items will be acceptable.

ONE CHILI PER COOK: Each head cook is responsible for cooking one pot of chili and turning in one judging cup from that pot! The head cook must prepare the chili that he or she intends to be judged; no more than one judging sample may be taken from any one pot.

SANITATION: Cooks are to prepare and cook the chili in as sanitary a manner as possible.
COOKING CONDITIONS SUBJECT TO INSPECTION: These conditions are subject to inspection by the judging committee and/or CASI Regional or Area Referee. Failure to comply is subject to disqualification.

YOU MAY HAVE TO TASTE YOUR CHILI: All chili cooks may be required, at the discretion of the Referee or Head Judge, to remove the lid from the chili cup and eat a spoonful of their own chili before turning it in for judging. If contestant refuses, the chili will be automatically disqualified.

PENALTIES: Failure to comply is subject to disqualification of the individual cook for that cook-off. Anyone disqualified will be notified immediately of the disqualification. Decisions of the official(s) are final.

SALSA RULES:

  1. Typed recipe must accompany product.
  2. All containers will be opened for judging.
  3. Must be made from “scratch”. No mixes.
  4. One entry per person.
  5. All safe food handling processes must be followed.
  6. Contestants must be willing to sample own product.
  7. Salsa can be fresh or canned.

Chicken Bingo

$1.00 will buy you a numbered square on the chicken bingo board.
The numbers will be sold at the Administration Office.

Wed., Thurs., Fri. and Sat. at 4:00 p.m. a chicken will be placed on the bingo board located in the Small Animal Barn. If the chicken decides to stop on your square to "conduct a little business" you will win 50% of the money taken in on this session of chicken bingo. The Fair Board will use the remaining 50% of the money to make improvements to the Small Animal Barn on the fair grounds.

Cookie Stacking

Thursday, July 10 at 6:30 P.M.
Veatch Stage

  • Kids 4 years & under, 5-6 years, 7-9 years, 10-12 years
  • 30 second time frame
  • No props, glue, or adhesive may be used
  • Win by stacking the most cookies that remain standing for 15 seconds after time is called


Davis County Cattlemen's Bottle/Bucket Calf Show

Thursday, July 10 - 7:00 pm in the Pavilion

Kids participating are Kindergarten through completion of 3rd Grade. 
Calves exhibited were born between March 1st and May 1st 2008. 
Applications closed at 3 pm May 15th. 
The kids will be showing their calves at 7:00 pm. 
Come and support this educational and fun activity - one of the highlights of our "salute to agriculture".

Entry deadline June 21, 2008.

In general, rules are:

  • Must be between 16-21 years of age.
  • Must never have been married or have had children.
  • Must be an active member of at least one service organization in her community.
  • Must reside in the county she represents.
  • Must be able to attend the Davis County Fair, July 8 - 13
  • Must be able to represent Davis County in the Iowa State Fair competition in August.

Several scholarships will be awarded along with other prizes!

  • Whoever can pull the weighted sled the greatest distance in their age group will be the winner of that class.

  • 1st and 2nd place finishers are eligible to sign up for the Iowa State Championship Pull.

Decorate Your Campsite

Judging at 9:00 pm on Friday night, July 11

Anyone camping, whether it is tent or camper, is encouraged to decorate his or her campsite
prior to the judging on Friday night.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Decorated to represent the 2008 fair theme "Ag is Our Bag"
  • Most Unique
  • Best use of lights
  • Best of Show

Ribbons will be awarded and the Best of Show Display will be forgiven their camping fees for this year’s fair!!!
Be thinking of ways that you can decorate your campsite.

There are plenty of camp spaces available and many have electric hook-ups with water nearby. Why not bring your family and camp a few days at the Davis County Fair? With the high price of fuel, it can be a fun and exciting outing for your family close to home. Make some lasting memories.


Dutch Oven Cook Off 

Sunday, July 13, 2008 
Davis County Fair Pavilion 
9:30 a.m. Start Cooking!

Rules: 
1. Individuals or teams of two to four members are welcome. Youth ages 12-17 can compete if there is an adult supervisor on your team. 
2. Enter one to four categories of your choice: dessert, bread, vegetable, and meat/main dish. Each contestant will be charged a $10 entry fee per category entered, $35 if all four categories are entered. 
3. The cooking committee will provide a cooking area, first aid station, ash/coal dumpsite and trash cans. Bring your own chairs and tables. 
4. Only team members are allowed in the cooking area. 
5. Use good fire safety practices. Keep yourself and the public safe. 
6. Cooking is limited to charcoal briquettes (must bring your own). No propane, gasoline or other such fuel may be used except to start fires and heat water. 
7. Contestants provide all ingredients and cooking utensils. Ingredients cannot be precooked and must be combined, chopped, sliced or diced during cooking preparation, with the exception of canned foods, marinades and sourdough starter. Marinating meat prior to the start of the competition is not allowed. 
8. All cooking must be done in a Dutch oven and everything cooked MUST be presented to the judges. The use of tin foil, pie tins and foil pan inserts ARE allowed. All foods submitted for judging must be displayed in the pot or on the lid. Removing burnt or undercooked portions of food will lead to disqualification. Dishes must be presented to the judges' table on time - NO EXCEPTIONS. Time warnings will be given periodically throughout the cook off. Once dishes have been presented to the judges, samples should be provided to the public. Small containers for your samples will be provided. 
9. Contestants are required to use safe food handling procedures. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Separate basins are needed for hand washing and dishwashing. 
10. Contestants can set up as early as 8:00 a.m. The cooks' meeting convenes at 9:00 a.m. Cooking begins at 9:30 a.m. 
11. Deserts will be judged at noon, vegetables at 12:30 p.m., meat/main dish at 1:15 p.m. and breads at 1:45 p.m. Presentation of awards will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Judging and Auction

Toilet seats will be given to 10 individuals prior to the Fair to be decorated in some manner. Seats may be painted, decaled, etc. but must be fully functional when they are returned for the judging and auction.

Proceeds of the Auction will be used to purchase picnic tables for the new
food court area at the Producer Group’s Food Stand.

The Gallon Challenge Milk Drinking Contest

Friday, July 11 at Noon

  • Strong bones, healthy teeth and a big stomach? You are qualified for this contest. It’s a gallon challenge milk drinking contest. Napkins will be provided for milk mustaches.
  • Three divisions: Ages 6-10, ages 11-14 and adults 15 years and over.
  • Open to the first 10 entrants in each division.
  • Awards given in each age category.
  • Timed event.

Genealogy Exhibits

Rules for Genealogy Exhibits for the 2008 Davis Co. Fair

Exhibitors must be residents of Davis Co. IA OR members of the Davis Co. Genealogical Society. They must purchase a Davis Co. Fair membership for $1.

Exhibits will be accepted on July 7, 2008 between noon and 5:00 p.m. at the Fair Exhibit Hall. Open judging will begin at 5:30 p.m. Contact iadavis@netins.net with questions.

  1. Each exhibit MUST have attached an explanation of genealogical connection of why it is important to the exhibitor including exhibitor's name and address. Please use the five W's in the explanation: Who, What, When, Where, and Why. Information needs to show relationship and be understandable as a stand-alone exhibit.
  2. Suggest use of sheet protectors or sandwich type bags for protection; lamination is not recommended.
  3. Original documents are discouraged, computer generated or photocopies will be accepted and need not be framed or matted.
  4. NO entries will be accepted by mail.
  5. No more than 1 entry per category per exhibitor.
  6. Previous year’s first 3 placing items may not be re-exhibited.

Judging is based on the item as described in the category and the genealogical value of the item, not on the age or presentation. If entries don't qualify or are not an acceptable standard, placing may be withheld. Not responsible in case of loss.

Adult Categories

  1. Pictorial Family History - poster or organized photo collection.
  2. Legal Document.
    1. Land grant, deed, mortgage, lien, etc. pertaining to land.
    2. Military record, discharge papers, pension, etc.
    3. Marriage, divorce, birth, death.
  3. Family Records - school, diary, letters, etc.
  4. Family Religious - confirmation, baptism, Bible pages, etc.
  5. Family Certificate/Document – wedding certificates, organization memberships, etc.
  6. Pedigree/Ancestor - Pyramid of parents in a direct line of an individual.
  7. Lineage – relationship between 2 people (i.e. John F Kennedy to Maria Shriver).
  8. Genealogical record book.
  9. Research material.
  10. Photo - 2 people or less, wedding, graduation, etc.
  11. Photo - 3 people or more of a family group.
  12. Photo - Ancestral building, home, church, school, etc.
  13. True Story written by exhibitor not to exceed 1 typewritten page.
  14. Article from publication, other than local with family connections.
  15. Storytelling display i.e. time line specific with photos.
  16. Photo depicting Davis Co. history - doesn’t need to have family connection.
  17. A written Davis Co. History of at least 1 page - a church, school, place, building, happening, etc. with or without photos.
  18. Scrapbook collection of clippings, photos, keepsakes, etc. NOT the new scrapbooking.
  19. Document or certificate relating to Davis Co. History does not have to relate to exhibitor.
  20. Display of 2 or more documents that are relevant to each other.
  21. Miscellaneous – if artifact, bring only photo and written facts as outlined above.

Junior Categories (Junior exhibitors must be under 14 years old as of July 1, 2008)

  1. Family history hand written by exhibitor.
  2. School or church records of exhibitor.
  3. Photo - can be of self or others (see above suggestions).
  4. Davis County history - written history of a happening, place, building, business, etc.
  5. Miscellaneous.

Kiss a Pig

Contestants will be chosen from the Davis County area. You may be asked to be a contestant! Pucker up! You know how it works. The list of contestants will be displayed in the Food Court area, along with containers for the collection of your $$$ votes. The votes will be tallied and the winner (or maybe we should say, the “loser”) will be the one with the most money collected. That person will kiss the pig in front of the grandstand prior to the Demolition Derby on Sunday night July 13 at 6:45 P.M.

All proceeds from this contest will be used to buy picnic tables for the new
food court area near the Veatch Picnic Shelter.

Pie & Cake Baking Contest

Thursday, July 10, Veatch Picnic Shelter
Entries 8:30 a.m. Judging to begin at 9:30 a.m.

  1. Contest open to any age contestant.
  2. No more than 2 entries per person per class.
  3. Pie Division:
    1. Single Crust Pie
    2. Double Crust Pie
    3. Meringue Pie
    4. Men’s Class - any kind of pie
    5. Youth Class (16 & under) - any kind of pie
  4. Cake Division:
    1. Frosted Cake - any kind
  5. Pies & cakes must be delivered in covered disposable containers as they will be sold with the container it comes in.
  6. Please attach a removable tag to each entry showing the contestants name, class letter & name, plus the kind of pie &/or cake.

First and second place awards will be given in each class
Auction of all pies & cakes at Noon



Prize Give Away!

Winners Drawn From Membership Ticket Holders

Membership Tickets available at the Fair Administration Office for $1.00 each or 12 for $10.00

The Prize Committee will draw names of winners daily on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Names will be posted on a sign outside of the Administration Office at 6:00 p.m. each day.

The person named on the membership ticket must claim the prizes.

Prizes must be claimed before the drawing occurring on the following day or the prizes
will be put back into the drawing for new winners.

A "cleanup drawing" for all unclaimed prizes will be held on Sunday, July 13 at 6:00 pm.
Must be present at this drawing to win.

Prizes will be donated by local merchants and the Davis County Agricultural Society



Quilters Block Contest

Davis County Fair Hall July 8 – 12

Area quilters have been invited to enter a quilt block contest. After receiving a packet of fabric, blocks were made by contestants. The blocks will be on display. After the Fair, the blocks will be made into a beautiful quilt to be raffled at next year's Davis County Fair. All profits will be used to improve the Davis County Fair Hall. Be sure to see the blocks while you are at the Fair!

QUILT BLOCK THEME: 30'S REPRODUCTION QUILT

Rules:

  1. Each contestant is receiving a packet containing 4 fabrics. Use at least 3 of the 4 fabrics. Add no other fabrics.
  2. Each block must be 9 ½" x 9 ½" unfinished or 9" x 9" finished. Your block will not be judged if the size is incorrect. 
  3. Blocks may be pieced or paper foundation pieced. No appliqué or embellishment. (Preferable block patterns of the 30’s or 40’s.)
  4. The contest is limited to the first 50 people. Only one block per person. Blocks will be judged on creativity, best use of fabrics provided and workmanship.
  5. Blocks will become the property of the Davis County Agricultural Society.
  6. Do not attach blocks to any backing.

Look in the Fair Exhibit Hall for the quilt made from last year’s blocks.

Be sure to buy several chances to win the quilt.

Winner will be drawn on Sunday, July 13 at 6:00 p.m. on the Veatch Stage.

Steer Showmanship

Adult Division
Friday Afternoon, July 11

Immediately following the youth steer show, which begins at 1 pm, 
adults are invited to participate in a showmanship contest.

Borrow a youngster’s steer exhibit and show the judge what a great showman you are!
Winner will be determined on his/her showmanship skills, not the conformation or grooming of the animal.
You need not be the parent of a 4-H/FFA member to participate. Everyone is welcome!

Youth Livestock Judging Contest

Sponsored by Davis County Farm Bureau
Thursday July 10 at 8:00 a.m. in the Old Show Barn

Junior Division 4th - 8th Grades
Senior Division 9th - 12th Grades

Judging four classes of livestock:
Market Lamb, Market Swine, Market Beef, Breeding Beef

1st place in each division will receive a $150 savings bond
2nd place in each division will receive a $100 savings bond
3rd place in each division will receive a $50 savings bond

Top individual in each class will also receive a jacket to be given at a later date

Be sure to register to receive a t-shirt

 

Youth Novice Sheep Showmanship

Thursday, July 10 - 5:30 pm - Sheep Barn
Kids through age 9 may participate (or completion of 3rd Grade).
All children may show one lamb in this class.
All entrants show together.
Davis County Sheep Producers will provide Ribbons.
